Mindful that children are our most precious asset, the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) has initiated a retrofit program to ensure that childcare centres throughout Canada are safer from disasters. The "Protecting Our Kids From Disasters" program will better protect children in child care centres from earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and winter storms through simple, non-structural modifications. The basic preventative measures recommended by the program reduce vulnerability during a disaster and help mitigate the loss experienced by the childcare facility.
The program is available free of charge. Please contact us for details. For an average sized centre we find that you will spend between $500.00 and $1,000.00 on supplies, and you need a few volunteers. With a little bit of preparation any group of adults can complete these improvements with ease. The program and instructional video shows the simple actions needed to further improve the safety for the children.
For further details please contact the program manager, Tracy Waddington at (416) 364-8677 or by email at twaddington@iclr.org.
