Research Priorities

The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction is committed to providing quality, multi-disciplinary research that improves knowledge about how to prevent natural hazards from becoming disasters. We seek to identify effective ways to reduce the impact of these events on our society, economy and culture. By expanding knowledge of disaster management and mitigation, the Institute emphasizes innovative and multidisciplinary approaches. ICLR is dedicated to the dissemination of these research findings through the transfer of knowledge to a variety of sectors.

ICLR has established four research priorities which articulate the Institute’s longer-term research program. Interdisciplinary investigation into these issues will provide a comprehensive understanding of the issues facing disaster loss reduction.

Reducing wind and earthquake damage to housing, other buildings and infrastructure.
Understanding disaster risk management and prevention.
Enhancing government science related to natural disasters.
Improving community actions for disaster mitigation.
